Basic Eligibility
Age

- 18–20: Can drive within your state only (intrastate)
- 21+: Required for interstate driving, hazardous materials, and most jobs

Medical Requirements
- Must pass a DOT medical exam

CDL Permit (CLP)
Before getting a full CDL, you must:
- Pass written knowledge tests for:
- General knowledge
- Air brakes (if applicable)
- Combination vehicles
- Receive your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP)
- Hold the CLP for at least 14 days before the skills test
Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT)
- Required federally before taking the road test
- Must be completed through a registered training provider
- Includes:
- Classroom/theory training
- Behind-the-wheel training
Skills Test
You must pass 3 parts:
- Pre-trip inspection
- Basic vehicle control
- Road test (driving in real conditions)
Endorsements (Optional but Valuable)
Additional testing required for:
- T – Double/Triple trailers

- H – Hazardous materials (requires TSA background check)
