CHECKLIST FOR “UNDER” 18 YEAR
You must be at least 15 ½, but under 18 years to get a permit. To obtain a permit you must:

Over 18?
For drivers 18 or older in California, the licensing process is simpler than for teens. Here’s what you need:
STEP 1: Complete a Driver’s License Application

- Apply online at the California DMV or in person at a DMV office.

Step 2: Visit the DMV With

- Proof of identity (birth certificate, passport, or REAL ID documents)
- Social Security number + Two proofs of California residency
- Payment for the application fee
Step 3: Pass Required Tests

Pass a vision test

Pass the written knowledge test to receive a learner’s permit.

Step 4: Practice Driving

- No mandatory classroom driver’s ed required or minimum required driving hours
- You may schedule the road test once you feel ready, however, professional lessons are strongly recommended for safety and test readiness
Step 5: Take the Behind-the-Wheel Driving Test

- Bring a licensed driver (25+) to drive you to the DMV and a safe, registered, insured vehicle.
Step 6: Receive Your License

- If you pass, you’ll receive a temporary license and your official license will arrive by mail
